The Masked Penn Stater Crowns A Champion

Earlier this week, five notable Penn Staters entered Onward State’s first-ever “Masked Penn Stater” competition. Today, one will walk away as our first-ever champion.

You, our beloved readers, voted and determined who earned our very prestigious crown. Below, we’ll reveal each contestant’s identity in backward order of votes received.

Do you think you guessed correctly? Did your favorite win? Scroll below to find out.

Fifth Place: The Fox

Singing “You Got A Friend In Me” from “Toy Story,” the Fox proved to be one of the more difficult contestants to guess. There were a lot of unsure beliefs, with someone even guessing it was Alvin from “Alvin and the Chipmunks.”

One person got very close by guessing UPUA President Zach McKay. However, they were still wrong.

Newly-elected UPUA Vice President Lexy Pathickal was the woman behind the mask! Her clues were about being a person that students can come to about their issues (role in student government), bringing order (one of the roles UPUA’s vice president has in meetings), and maybe not knowing who she is, but how you probably should (importance of student government).

Fourth Place: The Goat

The Goat electrified with his rendition of “Friend Like Me” from “Aladdin,” and people enjoyed the performance. Readers were able to recognize the Goat a little more than The Fox, though. Some notable incorrect guesses include James Franklin, Pat Chambers, Lamar Stevens, and The Willard Preacher.

In reality, it was Ethan Cook, better known as the PSU TV Guy. Cook’s clues were his favorite snack being UTZ (a sponsor for Penn State men’s basketball), timeouts being his time to shine (the moments when he gives out his TVs), and his sport involving a net (basketball).

Third Place: The German Shepard

The German Shepard was easily the hardest contestant to guess. Her performance of “Basket Case” by Green Day made a lot of folks unsure of her age, especially as one of her clues was that the song was popular when she was in college. The closest guess was Human Development and Family Studies professor Molly Countermine (who we actually tried to get for this!).

The German Shepard was in fact PSYCH 100 professor Beth Gerace! She used one of her clues to try and highlight the subject she teaches by saying her competition would do well…”Psych!”

Second Place: The Frog

The Frog gave a one-of-a-kind performance of “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” from “The Lion King.” He sang both of Simba’s parts, as well as Zazu’s. The guesses here were all over the board, with names like Sean Clifford, Will Levis, and Sam Richards thrown out. The most popular guess was fan-favorite CHEM 110 professor Todd Pontius.

The real person behind the mask was ECON 104 professor James Tierney! His clues included how often he moves around his classroom, how he teaches in Forum, and how he’s a big fan of the Mets and economist Janet Yellen.

First Place: The Lion

With his performance of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb,” the Lion is our winner. He was far-and-away the best-guessed performer. The Lion’s music clues, announcer voice, and love of the Jona Brothers made his identity very clear.

And the winner is…Beaver Stadium music man PJ Mullen! Congrats on becoming Onward State’s first-ever Masked Penn Stater champion, PJ. We’d like to thank you and the rest of our contests for competing, and our lovely audience for playing along.
