Tommy Stevens Making Switch To Tight End With New Orleans Saints

Former Penn State quarterback Tommy Stevens is trying out a new position early on in his NFL career, as he’s currently listed as a tight end on the New Orleans Saints’ roster.

Stevens, drafted as a quarterback by the Saints with the No. 240 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, will make the switch to tight end and likely have a better chance of making the team as a result. He was previously set to be the fourth-string quarterback on the depth chart behind Drew Brees, Taysom Hill, and Jameis Winston.

At 6′ 5″, 235 pounds, Stevens has more than enough size to be a capable NFL tight end. The other four tight ends on the roster — Jared Cook, Josh Hill, Adam Trautman, and Garrett Griffin — are all either 6′ 5″ or 6′ 4″, respectively. Cook and Hill are both veterans and safe bets to make the team, while Trautman, drafted in the third round of this year’s draft, is likely a lock as well. Griffin, on the other hand, entered the league back in 2016 and has only one career reception.

Should he impress, it’s entirely possible that Stevens could make the roster as the fourth tight end. He’s currently wearing No. 85, a number blocked off for receivers and tight ends.

Stevens’ teammate and fellow tight end Jared Cook discussed the former quarterback’s position change. He called it a “pretty tough” transition but mentioned Stevens catches the ball “really well” and has been improving.

While at Penn State, Stevens was able to showcase his pass-catching ability on a limited basis as a utility weapon for the Nittany Lions. He totaled 14 receptions for 62 yards and two touchdowns between 2017 and 2018.
