Carolina Panthers Sign Tommy Stevens To Practice Squad

Penn State’s favorite backup quarterback has found a new home in the NFL.

Tommy Stevens signed with the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad Monday night. He joins Carolina after half a season with the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad.

Stevens was drafted in the seventh round by New Orleans in the 2020 NFL Draft. During his time with the Saints, Stevens spent time working on transitioning to a tight end. He is listed as a quarterback with the Panthers.

Stevens was a fan-favorite in Happy Valley during his tenure. He found his role with the Nittany Lions at the “Lion” position. His versatility and playmaking ability made helped him accumulate 14 touchdowns in the two seasons he played for Penn State.

Stevens transferred out of the program to Mississippi State following the 2018 season. He then endured an injury-riddled, inconsistent season with former Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead in Starksville before being drafted.

It’s still unlikely that Stevens will see the field in the NFL as of now, especially with Teddy Bridgewater as the clear starter for the Panthers. Stevens will have a tall task ahead of him to try a carve out a role with Carolina for the foreseeable future.
