145 More University Park Students Test Positive For Coronavirus
One hundred and forty-five more University Park students have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the latest update to Penn State’s COVID-19 Dashboard Tuesday.
Five employees also tested positive.
The university administered 2,323 total tests to students between November 13 and 15, resulting in 52 positives, 1,238 negatives, and 1,033 pending tests.
A large number of Tuesday’s added positives appear to be from tests that were previously pending before the update. Last Friday, more than 400 students were awaiting results.
According to the dashboard’s update, 39 students are currently in on-campus quarantine, while 57 are in on-campus isolation. Penn State will continue offering Eastview Terrace spaces for affected students once the university moves the fall semester online this weekend.
Since testing began on August 7, Penn State has found 4,473 student coronavirus cases at University Park out of 69,135 administered tests. Additionally, 29 employees have tested positive so far.
According to the dashboard, 273 student cases remain active at University Park, while 4,200 are inactive. Ten employee cases are active, while 19 are not.
It’s worth noting Penn State defines “inactive” as any case that’s more than 10 days old. At this time, it’s unclear how many inactive cases, if any, have actually tested negative and are truly dormant.
Kelly Wolgast, director of Penn State’s COVID-19 Operations Control Center, said higher reported positives aren’t much cause for concern as pre-departure testing gets underway.
“With our on-demand testing numbers now including the results of our voluntary student departure testing, both our numbers of tests performed and our positive results are higher than we have seen in more recent updates to the dashboard. This is expected,” Wolgast said. “We are up to more than 15,000 students across all campuses who have heeded our call to sign-up for a test, and the week is still early. We won’t turn any student away from testing.”
Penn State plans to update the dashboard with new testing statistics twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. The tool incorporates data random surveillance testing, symptomatic testing, and self-reported testing through University Health Services or Occupational Medicine.
Penn State’s data and Pennsylvania’s Department of Health data may vary due to lag between test collection and test results from various labs.
Students can register for pre-departure coronavirus testing before the fall semester moves online this weekend. Testing will occur at the Bryce Jordan Center through Thursday, November 19.
“We urge all students to take advantage of the departure testing being offered at no cost to them,” Damon Sims, vice president for Student Affairs, said. “It is critical for students to be tested to reduce the risk of unwittingly infecting others when they return home to family and friends. We are encouraging students who test positive to isolate on campus or in a suitable single-occupancy space off campus before leaving for Thanksgiving break — or to take appropriate precautions to self-isolate if they do choose to return home.”
