Gameday Coverage: Penn State vs. Iowa

Deep in an 0-4 hole, Penn State football will host Iowa for its third home game of the season on Saturday.

A Hawkeye team that started out slowly now comes into Beaver Stadium seeking its third straight win. The Nittany Lions, donning their Generations of Greatness uniforms, are desperate for a victory after one of the worst starts in program history.

Here’s everything you need to know for Penn State’s fifth game of the season.

Television

Saturday’s matchup will kick off at 3:30 p.m. and be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. Joe Beninati and Matt Millen will be on the call while Rick Pizzo will report from the sideline.

Radio

Penn State Sports Network — Steve Jones and Jack Ham
Local: 99.5 & 103.7 FM/1450 AM, XM: Ch. 196, Streaming: 958

Weather

It’s forecasted to be a warm but cloudy day in Happy Valley. Anticipate 52 degrees at kickoff with temperatures dropping into the high 40s as the game progresses.

There’s no rain in the forecast, according to AccuWeather. Expect 55% humidity and a dew point of 35 degrees.

Last Meeting

It was a nailbiter throughout when these teams last met in 2019. Noah Cain rushed more than 100 yards and KJ Hamler hauled in seven passes for 61 yards and one acrobatic touchdown in a 17-12 victory for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State holds a 17-12 series lead over Iowa. The Nittany Lions are also on a six-game win streak against the Hawkeyes.

Injuries/Suspensions

James Franklin typically plays his injury cards close to his chest, so we aren’t sure about the team’s health status. Noah Cain will miss the game after suffering a season-ending injury in week one. Journey Brown will also be sidelined after medically retiring due to a heart condition.

Iowa will be likely be without defensive end John Waggoner Saturday. Offensive tackle Coy Cronk and defensive tackle Jack Heflin are set to return after recently suffering minor injuries.

We won’t know until kickoff if anyone has tested positive for the coronavirus. James Franklin said Penn State has experienced a high amount of false-positive tests so far this year, which is a concern the morning of any game.

Betting Lines

Iowa is a one-point favorite heading into this game, according to OddsShark. This is the second time Penn State has been a home underdog this season. The over-under is set for 45.5 points, 11 points lower than Penn State’s previous game against Nebraska.
