Gameday Coverage: Penn State vs. Rutgers

Coming off its first win of the season, Penn State football (1-5) will travel to the Piscataway to take on Rutgers (2-4) on Saturday.

The Scarlet Knights are having one of their most productive seasons in recent history, picking up conference wins for the first time in two years. The Nittany Lions, on the other hand, are recovering from their first 0-5 start in program history.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s game.

Television

Saturday’s matchup will kick off at noon and be broadcast on FS1. Mark Followill and Penn State letterman Matt Millen will be on the call. Olivia Dekker will also help report from the sideline.

Radio

Penn State Sports Network — Steve Jones and Jack Ham
Local: 99.5 & 103.7 FM/1450 AM, Sirius: Ch. 136, XM: 383, Internet: 973

Weather

It’s going to be a pretty miserable day in New Jersey. Temperatures will be in the mid-40s at kickoff and will continue to drop throughout the game. The sun likely won’t make an appearance Saturday afternoon.

There’s a 79% chance of rain at kickoff, according to AccuWeather. Expect 83% humidity and a dew point of 41 degrees.

Last Meeting

Will Levis led Penn State to a 27-6 win over Rutgers when these two teams last met in 2019. Levis rushed 17 times for 108 yards while Jahan Dotson caught one pass for 44 yards and a score.

Penn State holds an extremely dominant 28-2 series lead over Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights haven’t beaten the Nittany Lions since 1988 and have never won in Piscataway.

Injuries/Suspensions

James Franklin typically plays his injury cards close to his chest, so we aren’t sure about the team’s health status. Noah Cain and Pat Freiermuth will miss Saturday’s game after suffering season-ending injuries. Devyn Ford, who missed last week’s game against Michigan, is expected to return.

Rutgers’ starting quarterback Noah Vedral and offensive lineman Raiqwon O’Neal have both recently missed time, but head coach Greg Sciano hopes to have them both back against Penn State.

We won’t know until kickoff if anyone has tested positive for the coronavirus. James Franklin said Penn State has experienced a high amount of false-positive tests so far this year, which is a concern the morning of any game.

Betting Lines

Penn State is an 11.5 point favorite against Rutgers, according to OddsShark. The Nittany Lions are 1-5 against the spread this year. The over-under is set for 52.5 points, 5.5 points lower than Penn State’s previous game against Iowa. The under hit last week.
