Penn State To Host Racism, Bias, & Safety Town Hall December 9

Penn State will host a virtual town hall on Wednesday, December 9 to discuss the recommendations set by the university’s Select Presidential Commission on Racism, Bias, and Community Safety and the Student Code of Conduct Task Force.

The event will stretch from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

The two groups have worked to develop recommendations in response to President Eric Barron’s plan to address immediate and longstanding problems of racism, bias, and intolerance at Penn State.

Students and community members can anonymously submit their comments and questions through an online form. The event will be streamed virtually and later archived for repeat viewing.

Barron will be joined by the co-chairs from both the presidential commission and the code task force, including:

  • Danielle M. Conway, Dean and Donald J. Farage Professor of Law at Dickinson Law
  • Clarence E. Lang, Susan Welch Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and professor of African American studies
  • Elizabeth Seymor, Chair of the University Faculty Senate and Penn State Altoona anthropology, communications, history, and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies
  • Nyla Holland, President of Penn State Black Caucus
  • Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, Founder and Director of the Center for Immigrants’ Rights Clinic, and associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Penn State Law

Additionally, Tamla J. Lewis, associate general counsel, and Danny Shaha, assistant vice president for Student Affairs, will join the event.

The 19-member select commission and the 26-member conduct code task force offer recommendations to the university to build a more inclusive and equitable environment. University leaders will develop an implementation plan based on the recommendations and responses from the community to achieve best practices throughout Penn State.

The draft reports for the select commission and conduct code task force can be viewed on the Action Together website.
