Five Nittany Lions Earn All-Big Ten Defensive Honors

Update, 1:19 p.m.: Four other Nittany Lion defenders earned postseason honors Wednesday.

Defensive tackles PJ Mustipher and Antonio Shelton, cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields, and linebacker Brandon Smith all received honorable mentions for the All-Big Ten squads.

Original Story: Five Penn State football stars earned All-Big Ten Defensive honors Wednesday afternoon, as voted on by the media and the conference’s coaches.

Jayson Oweh and Shaka Toney were both named All-Big Ten First Team, while Jaquan Brisker, Lamont Wade, and Joey Porter Jr. earned All-Big Ten Third Team honors.

Toney was named to the First Team by both the media and coaches after earning second-team honors last season from just the coaches. The senior defensive end has been one of the anchors of Brent Pry’s defense this season, totaling 25 tackles, 6.5 for a loss, four sacks, and one forced fumble.

On the other end of the line, Oweh has put together a really strong season against the run, which earned him the first-team nod from the coaches. He has posted 38 tackles, 6.5 for a loss, and one pass deflection in seven games played. His 38 tackles rank No. 4 on the team, an impressive mark for a defensive lineman.

Wade and Brisker have done a solid job at the safety position for the Nittany Lions. Brisker has had a great season, as he has totaled 50 tackles (third-highest on the team), three tackles for loss, five passes defended, and one interception. Wade, the veteran of the group, has totaled 36 tackles, two passes defended, and one interception.

Porter, a redshirt freshman, has opened some eyes as a first-time starter this season at cornerback, which earned him the honor from the media. He’s been the most consistent corner on the team and has totaled 33 tackles, two for a loss, four passes defended, and one sack.

Penn State will attempt to keep its hot streak rolling when it takes on Illinois at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Beaver Stadium. The game is part of the Big Ten’s “Champions Week” and will be broadcast on FS1.
