Penn State Student Trustee Applications Now Open
Applications to represent Penn State’s student body as part of its highest governing body, the Board of Trustees, are officially open.
Any full-time undergraduate or graduate student can apply to serve the two-year position alongside Penn State’s Board of Trustees. The only requirement? At least two years remaining at Dear Old State.
Applications to join the selection committee are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, February 5, while student trustee applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, February 19.
From there, the selection committee will review applications and recommend one candidate to the chair of the Board of Trustees. That student will be interviewed by three trustees and evaluated by the Board’s Governance and Long Range Planning Committee.
“The student trustee is the only student position that is tasked with considering all 90,000 Penn State students,” current student trustee Bryan Culler said. “This means every campus across the commonwealth, our World Campus, and graduate and professional students alike. So the best person for the role would have an in-depth knowledge of Penn State and the problems that a broad variety of students face, not just the ones that you have shared experience with.”
Culler will head the selection committee, which is comprised of student government leaders and six at-large student members who are chosen through the selection committee application process.
Culler said working alongside “fascinating” board members is a “pretty awesome advantage” for anyone who may fill the role.
“I’ve been so fortunate to serve Penn State in this role for the last two years, and it has totally reshaped my view on the way big organizations run,” Culler said. “I’m genuinely sad for my time on the Board to end, and I’m not at all looking forward to being washed up my senior year.”
