Penn State women’s hockey had seven players receive 2021 College Hockey America (CHA) regular-season accolades Wednesday.

Freshman Kiara Zanon was awarded CHA Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. The New York native has had a breakout season with a conference-leading 30 points (10 goals, 20 assists). Zanon ranks third nationally and leads all rookies across the country.

Last week, Zanon also became the first Nittany Lion to be chosen as a 2021 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award finalist, which honors the nation’s top women’s hockey player.

Goalie Josie Bothun received CHA Goalie of the Year honors. The freshman holds the program’s single-season record with 16 wins in 20 career starts. Last week, Bothun became the Nittany Lion’s first Hockey Commissioners Association Women’s Hockey Goaltender of the Year award nominee. Bothun leads the league with a 1.36 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage.

Zanon and Bothun were given All-CHA first-team honors, along with captain Natalie Heising, and Jessica Adolfsson. Izzy Heminger earned All-CHA second-team honors. Zanon, Bothun, Olivia Wallin, and Lyndie Lobdell were all given CHA All-Rookie team honors. Heising also received the CHA Individual Sportsmanship Award.

Captain Heising has racked up 20 points with seven goals and 13 assists in 16 games this season. The Minnesota native hit the 50-career goal mark on November 30, 2020. Her 97 career points (54 goals, 43 assists) rank her third on Penn State’s all-time scoring list.

Adolfsson ranks third among Penn State defenders with 11 points (4 goals, 7 assists). The Swedish native is known for her high hockey IQ and playmaking ability.

Defender Heminger had 12 points this season with two goals and ten assists and ranks third in Nittany Lion history in scoring for defenders with 41 points in 88 games.

Wallin’s 11 goals tie the team lead and put her second in both the conference and amid all rookies nationally. Lobdell has led the team’s defense in scoring with 14 points (one goal, 13 assists.)

Additionally, head coach Jeff Kampersal was awarded his first CHA Coach of the Year. Kampersal posted a 16-2-2 record this season, upping the program’s win total to 52, the most in program history. Kampersal has 579 career wins, placing him at seventh all-time in Division I women’s hockey.

Penn State will start its postseason in the CHA Tournament semifinals at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 5, in Erie, Pennsylvania, at the Erie Insurance Arena.
