Penn State Women’s Soccer Ties Ohio State 2-2

No. 10 Penn State women’s soccer (4-1-1) tied the Ohio State Buckeyes (2-1-2) in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday in a well-matched game that went into overtime.

The Nittany Lions saw some tough competition from the Buckeyes, who were not shy to put up a fight. The match was sent to overtime, but neither team could finish it off and post a game-winning score.

How It Happened

Ohio State was quick to take control of the game, scoring the first goal of the match at the three-minute mark via Kayla Fischer.

The Nittany Lions were eager to get back to a level playing field, and Cori Dyke took a shot on goal but missed just slightly wide of the goal in the sixth minute.

Penn State kept at it with multiple shots by Rachel Wasserman and Ally Schlegel but had no luck thanks to Ohio State’s keeper, Bailey Kolinski. The Buckeyes started to attempt more shots on goal, but the Nittany Lions did a good job holding their defensive line.

Both teams continued to attempt multiple shots in the first half, but the score remained steady 1-0 with the Buckeyes leading.

Sam Coffey brought the Nittany Lions back up in the 49th minute with a beautiful run from the half. Her ball landed squarely in the right back corner, settling the score 1-1.

Ohio State almost pulled ahead again when Emma Sears had a straight shot towards the goal. Penn State keeper Kat Asman was not intimidated, though. Asman had a great diving save that kept the Nittany Lions’ goal safe.

Although Asman had that great save, she couldn’t get her hands on another Ohio State shot. Fischer scored the Buckeyes’ second goal in the 65th minute with an assist from Peyton McNamara and Marissa Birzon.

Penn State quickly bounced back with its second goal in the 67th minute. Schlegel received a ball with her back to the goal and gave it a quick tap backward, where the ball got lost in the chaos of the box and slipped into the goal.

In an attempt to take the game in the last five minutes, Coffey sent a left-footed rocket towards the goal that went just slightly over the crossbar, keeping the score even. Ohio State tried to score in the last ten seconds to no avail, sending the game into overtime.

Both Penn State and Ohio State were eager to score the game-ending goal, so they each sent as many shots as possible. Coffey and Kristin Schnurr advanced a few toward the goal for the Nittany Lions. Both 10 minute-halves of overtime went by without a goal, ending the game in a 2-2 draw.
