State College Man Arrested In January Assault Of Capitol Police Officer

A State College man was one of two individuals charged by the United States Justice Department this week following an alleged assault on Brian Sicknick, a Capitol Police officer who died after fighting rioters in Washington, D.C. in January, according to the New York Times and Washington Post.

Julian Khater, a 32-year-old former State College business owner, was arrested after getting off a plane at a Newark, New Jersey airport Sunday. FBI officers arrested him and George Pierre Tanios, a separate business owner who previously ran a deli in West Virginia, on charges of allegedly assaulting several officers, including Sicknick, with bear spray.

Both individuals are expected to appear in federal court Monday.

According to the Washington Post‘s report, the individuals were identified through video and camera footage captured at the Capitol riots. Arrest papers said Khater allegedly told Tanios to “give [him] that bear shit” when he was near a barricade where Sicknick and two other officers stood watch.

Sicknick died in a hospital on January 7, one day following the riots. It’s not clear whether his death was a result of exposure to the spray or the men’s other actions. Medical examiners said they’re still investigating the officer’s death.

The duo faces nine counts that include assaulting three officers with “a deadly weapon.” They also face charges of civil disorder and obstruction of a congressional proceeding. According to the Washington Post, the charges could lead to up to 20 years in prison.

Khater owned Frutta Bowls’ State College location, which appeared to have closed suddenly back in June, and a separate franchise of the same brand in North Carolina. The health food chain first opened in the borough in January 2019.
