Reports: Three More Penn State Hoops Players Enter Transfer Portal
Well, this isn’t good, folks.
After Jamari Wheeler and John Harrar reportedly entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier Tuesday morning, three more Penn State men’s basketball players have purportedly entered the portal.
Guards Myreon Jones and Izaiah Brockington, as well as forward Trent Buttrick, are the latest to reportedly try their luck in the portal, according to various reports.
Jones took over as Penn State’s leading scorer this season following the departure of program legend Lamar Stevens. The Birmingham, Alabama native averaged 15.3 and 2.7 rebounds per game while shooting a superb 39.5% from three-point range.
He started all but one game this season and will now reportedly move on after three years with the program.
Brockington, meanwhile, started off his college career with St. Bonaventure before transferring to Penn State after his freshman season in 2017-18. The Philadelphia native came off the bench the entirety of his first year with the Nittany Lions during the 2019-20 season, but he stepped into a starting role this season.
He averaged 12.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game for Jim Ferry’s squad while playing 29.7 minutes a night. If the reports are true, Brockington will now try his luck in the transfer portal for the second time in his career.
Buttrick has spent four seasons with the Nittany Lions, most of it spent as a reserve player for the squad. However, he earned a career-high 13.3 minutes per game during the 2020-21 season and averaged three points and three rebounds per game.
According to The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder, Buttrick and Brockington are entering the portal as graduate transfers.
All this movement comes a day after the program officially hired Micah Shrewsberry as the team’s next head coach. If the reported transfers are true, it appears the new coach will have quite the roster turnover to deal with this offseason.
