What Else Does ‘We Are’ Mean?

When you hear “We Are,” the first thing you might think about is Penn State. However, the slogan goes way beyond Happy Valley.

Even though Penn State may have helped popularize the mantra, it has been adopted throughout the world. From cities to other sports teams to even Fortune 500 companies, “We Are” applies to a lot more than just Penn State.

We Are…Philly

This organization is taking the meaning of the City of Brotherly Love to a whole new level.

We Are Philly is a campaign to serve food to people who have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. For every t-shirt bought on its website, $10 of those proceeds will go toward sending a basket of goods from Giordano’s Groceries to a “Philadelphian in need.”

We Are…Pittsburgh

Philadelphia and Penn State aren’t the only places in Pennsylvania where the “We Are” slogan is used.

The City of Pittsburgh unveiled a mural called “We Are Pittsburgh” on the facade of 625 Stanwix Street in May 2019. The mural features the faces of famous Yinzers such as Roberto Clemente, Andy Warhol, Rachel Carson, and more.

We Are…Family

Who could forget this classic?

Sister Sledge’s 1979 hit “We Are Family” can be recognized from almost anywhere. While sitting at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, the hit became the rally song of the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates, as they came behind to win the World Series over the Baltimore Orioles.

We Are…Maryland?

I’m sure everybody remembers Penn State’s embarrassing loss to Maryland this past season.

Despite still being the inferior football program (by head-to-head record, at least), Maryland’s online troll job was very well done.

We Are…Rangerstown

This slogan can be found all over New York City once springtime rolls around. The New York Rangers adopted the “We Are Rangerstown” slogan at the beginning of the 2013-14 season and carried it with them through a few playoff runs.

Even though the Rangers have adopted this slogan as their own, there haven’t been any “We Are” chants throughout Madison Square Garden like Beaver Stadium.

We Are…Never Ever Getting Back Together

This is one of those songs that brings you back in time when you listen to it.

Taylor Swift’s 2012 hit single “We Are Never Getting Back Together” was her first No. 1 track on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. The breakup anthem also topped the US Hot Country Songs for 10 weeks.

We Are…Farmers

The Farmers Insurance jingle is one of the most recognizable commercial sounds on television.

If you go somewhere outside of Happy Valley and shout “We Are” and hear “Farmers” in return, (probably followed by a hearty “bah, bah-bum-bum-bum-bum-bum”), now you know why.
