It’s no secret that Penn State men’s basketball and new head coach Micah Shrewsberry will need to be active in the transfer portal over the next few months.

Shortly after Shrewsberry was hired, we took a look at some targets that the Nittany Lions’ staff could potentially keep its eye on. Since then, however, several players in the portal have found new homes, and Penn State has lost key talent in Jamari Wheeler and Myreon Jones.

With that, here’s another look at some talented players in the transfer portal that Shrewsberry could make a run at.

Adam Miller, Illinois Guard

In the spirit of full disclosure, this could be a bit of a reach for the Nittany Lions. However, Shrewsberry and his new program would certainly offer the former Illinois point guard a chance to play meaningful minutes immediately in the Big Ten.

After starting all 31 games of his freshman season with the Fighting Illini, Miller entered the transfer portal earlier this month. The former four-star recruit was a solid complement to lottery pick candidate Ayo Dosunmu this season, averaging 8.3 points and 2.8 boards per game.

Miller was the No. 6 shooting guard in the nation coming out of high school and received offers from the likes of Kansas and Louisville. He’d be a key player for the Nittany Lions from the moment he steps on campus.

Call it a reach, but Shrewsberry has already made it clear that he’ll recruit his tail off throughout this offseason. Why not shoot for the stars?

Miller Kopp, Northwestern Forward

Another Big Ten stud, another solid fit for Penn State.

After a less-than-stellar campaign for Northwestern, Kopp officially entered the transfer portal just a few weeks ago. The 6’7″ forward out of Texas averaged 11.3 points for the Wildcats as a junior and was a threat from deep throughout, shooting 33.3% from beyond the arc.

Penn State still needs size and certainly could use a bolster in scoring production, and Kopp could offer both. He started in 74 games over the course of his Northwestern career, and that experience in the Big Ten should be a welcomed piece for Shrewsberry and his staff.

Tyler Harris, Iowa State Guard

Harris entered the transfer portal about a week ago after the Cyclones’ head coach Steve Prohm was fired.

The 5’9″ guard was a four-star recruit out of Tennessee and played his first two years of college hoops at Memphis, but he elected to transfer to Iowa State for junior season. Harris averaged 7.5 points per game this year, made 11 starts, and was second on the team with 39 total threes.

The guard also put up a season-high 22 points against eventual national champion Baylor.

While he hasn’t necessarily hit his stride in college basketball considering the lofty expectations set for him coming out of high school, Penn State could provide Harris a solid opportunity to help be a leader for the Nittany Lions. There’s no question about the level of competition the Big Ten has to offer, so he could showcase his talent on a huge platform alongside Shrewsberry.

Emmanuel Dowuona, Purdue Center

A Big Ten big man is exactly what Penn State needs, especially considering John Harrar is still in the transfer portal.

Dowuona entered the portal shortly after the Boilermakers’ season wrapped up, just after his former assistant coach became Penn State’s head coach. The Miami native seems to have yet to reach his full college basketball potential, as he played in just nine games in 2019-20 and didn’t appear in a game this past season.

Coming in at 6’10” and 245 pounds, there’s no doubt Dowuona has the size to compete in the Big Ten. Over the course of his only season he got at Purdue, however, he averaged just 3.4 minutes per game and 1.3 points.

He clearly needs more experience, but a possible connection to Shrewsberry could be key in getting a much-needed big man to Happy Valley.
