Penn State Student Sheds Light On Short Films Through ‘PSUFilmz’ Page

As you likely know all too well, there are many things to see, do, and experience in college. However, with everything offered at Penn State, there’s a great chance that there may be a few things that you’ve missed or didn’t even realize they were a thing to begin with.

That lack of awareness brought one particular Penn State student to start a new Instagram page to shed his own light on films created by both students and alumni.

The page’s owner, confirmed to be a Penn State student, asked to remain anonymous so the page would be about the content being made, and not the user himself. That individual, who I’ll refer to as “PSUFilmz” for simplicity’s sake, started the page after realizing there was no forum for Penn State film students to show off what they do.

“People don’t realize entirely how much work goes into making a student film,” said PSUFilmz, a film student. “Once it’s all done, you want to get your work out there. You want people to see it and these films. They’re fun to watch. People are making some cool stuff. I just wanted there to be an easier way for people to see those films.”

PSUFilmz, who has made multiple films on his own, wanted to shed light on short films specifically due to how “digestible” short films are. Believing it’s easier for viewers to get attached to short films due to their shorter nature compared to features, PSUFilmz said it’s a good way for people to see what students are doing.

“It’s a lot less to ask, ‘Hey, we made this five-minute video. Check it out. It’s really cool,’ than, ‘Here’s an hour and a half movie.,'” PSUFilmz said.

PSUFilmz shared that he has always had a love for movies but didn’t realize that it was a viable career option until he got to high school and was exposed to film classes. He hopes to move to Los Angeles one day to continue his dream of telling stories like his favorite director, Christopher Nolan.

So far, the account has featured only two films, but PSUFilmz shared that the page has some “big things” coming in the future.

“Penn State’s Blue and White Film Festival is coming up at the end of April. We will be featuring any films that are submitted then,” PSUFilmz said. “As the final thesis film deadlines start hitting toward the end of April and the beginning of May, I suspect we’re going to get a surge of submissions and people will be able to check out some cool things.”

Supporting small filmmakers is very easy to do, and it can take only a few minutes out of your day. Plus, it’s important to see every aspect of what the Penn State student body has to offer. There are some bright students making amazing things every day. Sometimes, we need to be reminded of that.
