Penn State Climate Action To Hold Earth Day Climate Strike April 22

Penn State Climate Action will hold an Earth Day climate strike at noon on Thursday, April 22, to call on State College and university leaders to support sustainability efforts and combate climate change.

The hour-long event will take place on Old Main Lawn. Penn State Climate Action is collaborating with Penn State Eco Action and Sunrise State College, two other organizations combating climate change on campus and in the community.

All participants must wear masks and social distance at the demonstration.

“This strike will display to Penn State decision-makers that students want quality sustainability education in the classroom that equips them with knowledge of how to solve these complex issues,” the organizations jointly wrote in a release.

According to an Instagram post, the organizations are striking to implore Penn State to divest completely from its fossil fuel assets and incorporate sustainability education into its curriculum so every student graduates with sustainability literature. The groups are also striking for State College to adopt a Green New Deal that invests in renewable energy and supports jobs for all.

In this year’s student government elections, the majority of Penn State student voters supported a resolution calling on the university to properly divest from fossil fuels.
