3/20 Coalition To Honor George Floyd, Black Lives In Community Vigil May 25

State College’s 3/20 Coalition will honor the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death with a community vigil and silent march on Tuesday, May 25.

The event will start at 6:30 p.m. at Sidney Friedman Park on South Fraser Street. There, a memorial will be created for Floyd and other Black lives lost throughout the past year.

Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police officers, which set off nationwide protests last summer, including a few right here in State College. Officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd’s neck for nearly 10 minutes, was found guilty in April of murdering Floyd.

“This year has changed us all and radically altered the landscape for racial justice and the end of anti-Black racism in our town and across the world,” the group said on Twitter.

The 3/20 Coalition formed following the death of borough resident Osaze Osagie, who was fatally shot in his own home by a State College police officer performing a mental health check in March 2019. The names of the three officers involved in his death were released by the borough in early January following pressure from the 3/20 Coalition and a lawsuit filed by the Osagie family. No officers have been charged.
