Penn State Football Skyrockets To No. 6 In AP Top 25 Poll
For the fourth consecutive week, Penn State football has risen in the AP Top 25 Poll.
After Saturday night’s White Out win over Auburn, James Franklin’s group climbed four spots to No. 6 in this week’s poll.
The Nittany Lions played a back-and-forth game with the Tigers, who now sit at No. 23 in the AP Top 25. Penn State did just enough on offense, however, as Sean Clifford totaled 28 completions worth 280 yards and two scores with just four incompletions. On the defensive end, Brent Pry’s group made all the stops it needed to against a potent Auburn rushing attack.
Penn State is now the second-highest ranked Big Ten team in the poll. The Nittany Lions jumped Ohio State (No. 10) who struggled early this week against Tulsa in a 41-20 victory. Iowa still leads the conference at No. 5, followed by Wisconsin (No. 18), Michigan (No. 19), and Michigan State (No. 20).
Franklin’s squad also now sits ahead Texas A&M (No. 7), Cincinnati (No. 8), and Clemson (No. 9).
The poll’s top four is still led by Alabama and Georgia, while Oregon jumped Oklahoma to take the No. 3 spot.
In this week’s USA Today Coaches Poll, Penn State comes in at No. 8. The Nittany Lions are joined by other Big Ten squads in that poll, including Iowa (No. 6), Ohio State (No. 12), Wisconsin (No. 15), Michigan (No. 19), and Michigan State (No. 21).
After opening the the season with two of their three games against ranked Power Five squads, the Nittany Lions will face Villanova next weekend at Beaver Stadium. The Wildcats have opened their season 3-0 with wins over Lehigh, Bucknell, and Richmond. That game will kick off at noon at Beaver Stadium Saturday and be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
