Sean Clifford Added To 2021 Maxwell Award Watch List

A week after being named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week, Sean Clifford was named to the 2021 Maxwell Award Watch List. The award is annually presented to the best player in college football.

The Maxwell Football Club announced its final additions to the list Wednesday morning. Clifford joins Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson on the list, as he was added earlier this season.

Penn State’s star quarterback has built an impressive resume through five weeks. Accumulating a Big Ten third-most 1,336 passing yards and 12 total touchdowns, Clifford has been a key element of the No. 4 Nittany Lions’ undefeated campaign.

The Maxwell Award is not the only honor Clifford’s name has been mentioned alongside. Prior to the season, he was added to the preseason watch list for the Manning Award, which is awarded the best collegiate quarterback in the country.

Clifford would become the Nittany Lions’ eighth Maxwell Award winner and the first since Larry Johnson won in 2002. Other notable Penn State winners include Kerry Collins (1994) and John Cappelletti (1973).

The Big Ten was well represented on the Maxwell Award’s final list, too. Ohio State wide receiver Chris Olave, Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan, and Iowa running back Tyler Goodson were listed, among several others.
