Three Penn State Baseball Players Earn All-Big Ten Honors
Three Penn State baseball players earned All-Big Ten honors for the 2022 regular season, as the Nittany Lions qualified for the Big Ten Tournament for the first time in ten seasons.
Catcher Matt Wood earned All-Big Ten first-team honors and took home the conference batting average title. The junior is the first Nittany Lion to be named to the All-Big Ten first team since Jordan Steranka in 2012. Wood had an outstanding season, hitting .395 overall and .413 in conference play. His .395 average ranks 19th among all division-1 players and third among catchers. Wood is the 16th first-team selection in program history.
Meanwhile, Josh Spiegel was named to the All-Big Ten second team as a designated hitter. Spiegel also split time with Wood at catcher and played first base occasionally throughout the season.
Spiegel, a redshirt junior, finished the regular season hitting .305 with ten homers and 42 RBI. Spiegel hit a team-high 16 doubles, which is ninth-most for a season in program history.
The designated hitter’s accolades do not end with Spiegel, though. Anthony Steele was named to the All-Freshman team for his work as the designated hitter this season. Steele hit .250 this season with a double, triple, and homer.
Relief pitcher Mason Mellot also received the Big Ten sportsmanship award. Mellott graduated in 2021 but came back for one more season on the mound with the Nittany Lions, as he racked up three wins and two saves over 20 appearances. He has appeared 87 times, which ranks second all-time in program history.
