Report: Penn State Men’s Hockey Forward JJ Wiebusch To Enter Transfer Portal

Penn State men’s hockey star winger JJ Wiebusch will enter the transfer portal after two seasons in Hockey Valley, Mark Divver of NHL.com reported on Monday.

Wiebusch stepped into the spotlight following a breakout stretch toward the end of his freshman season, helping propel the Nittany Lions to a Frozen Four appearance. In 2024-25, he tallied 33 points on 14 goals and 19 assists. He was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team, as well as the Allentown Regional All-Tournament Team.

He continued his upward trajectory in his sophomore campaign, recording 16 goals and 20 assists for a total of 36 points in three fewer games played. He received Big Ten Hockey Star of the Week honors twice over the course of the season.

The decision to enter the transfer portal comes shortly after Wiebusch’s linemates, Charlie Cerrato and Matt DiMarsico, announced they would be turning pro. The trio earned the nickname of the “Behind-The-Back Boys” and became the identity of the Penn State forward group during the team’s recent successes.

With the departure of that line, as well as former Hobey Baker Finalist Aiden Fink, Penn State will have a massive talent gap to fill this offseason.
