Penn State Football Announces Team Captains For 2022 Season
Penn State football announced its captains for the 2022 season Thursday night, two weeks to the day before its kickoff against Purdue.
The group of six is listed below:
- Sean Clifford (sixth-year, quarterback)
- Chris Stoll (sixth-year, long snapper)
- Jonathan Sutherland (sixth-year, linebacker)
- Juice Scruggs (redshirt senior, offensive lineman)
- PJ Mustipher (senior, defensive tackle)
- Ji’Ayir Brown (senior, safety)
Mustipher, Sutherland, and Clifford are returning captains from last year’s team, while Scruggs, Stoll, and Brown are captains for the first time in their careers. Mustipher has earned his second selection after his first in 2021. The star defensive tackle had an abbreviated season due to injury but was still named second-team All-Big Ten.
Brown recorded six interceptions in 2021, the most by a Penn State player since 2006. He punctuated his season with two interceptions against Arkansas in the Outback Bowl. Scruggs was an All-Big Ten honorable mention, while Stoll was a model of consistency, appearing in all 13 games.
Clifford and Sutherland have both earned their fourth appearances, extending the team record that they jointly set last season. Clifford is returning for his fourth season leading Penn State’s offense, after posting a 7-6 record last year. Sutherland racked up 24 tackles, 13 of them solo, and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2021.
