Sean Clifford Named To 2022 Manning Award Preseason Watch List

Penn State football quarterback Sean Clifford has been named to the 2022 Manning Award preseason watch list, the team announced Monday afternoon.

The award, which is named after Peyton, Eli, and Archie Manning, annually recognizes college football’s best quarterback. Additionally, it’s the only quarterback honor that takes bowl performances into consideration.

This is the third consecutive year Clifford has landed on the preseason watch list. In 2019, Clifford was added to the list during the season, so this is the fourth time total Clifford is contending for the award.

Clifford is coming off a season where he threw for 3,107 yards and 21 touchdowns while completing 61% of his passes. The four-time team captain enters the 2022 season with high expectations, as he’s been tabbed to five preseason watch lists thus far.

In addition to the Manning Award, he appears on watch lists for the Davey O’Brien Award, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Player of the Year, and the Wuerffel Trophy.

Penn State football’s 2022 campaign kicks off with a prime-time matchup against Purdue at 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 1. The game will air on FOX live from Ross–Ade Stadium
