Sean Clifford Named To 2022 Davey O’Brien Award Watch List

Not even one day after being listed on the Maxwell Award watch list, Penn State football’s Sean Clifford became one of 35 players named to the Davey O’Brien Award preseason watch list Tuesday.

The award is presented annually to the best quarterback in college football.

Clifford is entering his final season with the Nittany Lions and could be poised to have a career year. Coming off a campaign that ended in a disappointing fashion following a season-altering injury in Iowa, the Ohio native still delivered a respectable 2,912 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. He finished the season as the all-time leader in completion percentage at .603 and second all-time in career passing touchdowns with 62.

Along with Clifford, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Michigan State’s Payton Thorne, Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell, and Maryland’s Taulia Tagovailoa make up the five Big Ten quarterbacks on the watch list. Former Penn State quarterback Will Levis is on the list, as well.

Alabama’s Bryce Young won last season after throwing for 4,872 yards and 47 touchdowns en route to the Crimson Tide’s national championship loss to Georgia.

Todd Blackledge and Kerry Collins are the only two Penn Staters who have taken home the honor in the past. If Clifford were to win, he’d be the first Big Ten quarterback to receive the award since Ohio State’s Troy Smith in 2006.
