Ukrainian Society To Hold March For Independence Day August 24

Penn State’s Ukrainian Society is hosting a march in celebration of the country’s independence day today, August 24.

Beginning at 5 p.m., the processional will move from Old Main Plaza to the Allen Street Gates.

The society is requesting participants wear blue and yellow colors, or vyshyvanka — a traditional, embroidered shirt in Ukraine. Those interested are encouraged to bring Ukrainian flags, posters, and other accessories.

This year’s independence celebration is particularly notable, as August 24 marks six months of the war between Ukraine and Russia. While the war rages on and affects millions in Europe, members of the Ukrainian Society have been similarly affected, as many possess personal ties to those in Ukraine.

Shortly after the Russian military invaded Ukraine, Penn State’s Ukrainian Society began organizing rallies around campus in support of its nation.
