Sean Clifford Named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player Of The Week

Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford has been named this week’s Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Clifford will share this honor with Nebraska running back Anthony Grant, who totaled 189 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

For Clifford, it’s his third Offensive Player of the Week honor during his time at Penn State, having previously won after week four of the 2019, and 2021 seasons.

Clifford earns this award after completing a comeback 35-31 win over Purdue last Thursday night. The sixth-year quarterback threw for 282 yards, and four passing touchdowns while completing 20 of 37 pass attempts. Clifford also added 11 yards on the ground as well as a goal-line sneak touchdown.

After throwing a very costly pick-six midway through the fourth quarter, the Boilermakers went ahead 31-28. The Nittany Lions were able to get the ball back before the end of the game and Clifford led the offense on an 80-yard touchdown drive. A ten-yard pass to Keyvone Lee gave Penn State a 35-31 lead and ended up being the game-winning touchdown.

With the 282 passing yards on Thursday, Clifford became the third Penn State quarterback to record over 8,000 career passing yards, joining Trace McSorley (9,899) and Christian Hackenberg (8,457).

The 1-0 Nittany Lions will host Ohio University at noon this Saturday, September 10, for the first game of the season at Beaver Stadium.
