State College Borough Hosting November 3 Forum On Police Response To Penn State Protest

The State College Borough’s Community Oversight Board (COB) is hosting an open forum to discuss the police response to the October 24 protest at Penn State.

“The COB wishes to provide community members an opportunity to express their views on or experiences regarding the law enforcement response,” the borough’s website says.

Open to the public, the event will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 3, in the State College Municipal Building. The building is located at 243 S. Allen Street.

Community members will have the opportunity to publicly express their opinions to borough representatives and State College Police Department officials. Penn State University Police and Public Safety will have someone in attendance, although they will make no comment because the university’s department is unattached to the borough, according to a report from the Centre Daily Times.

When a Penn State student organization, Uncensored America, announced an event hosting Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes, students mobilized for an October 24 protest outside the event at the Thomas Building.

Though the university eventually canceled the event citing “escalating violence,” the announcement didn’t come before protestors and police officers were pepper sprayed by a still unknown assailant. Penn State police stated its officers did not discharge the pepper spray.

As part of the police’s response, local and state police used riot gear and horses to control the mounting crowds. The protest was deemed an “unlawful disturbance” and a statement was issued that individuals remaining in the area would be subject to arrest.

One arrest was made at the protest and the student suspect was later charged with multiple misdemeanors. Interested community members can find more information about the event and the Community Oversight Board on the borough’s designated webpage.
