November is Native American Heritage month, which includes the celebration of indigenous people, their culture, and their traditions. Penn State is partnering with various colleges and groups on campus to celebrate Native American Heritage month with multiple events across University Park and other Penn State campuses.

Over the past summer, Penn State’s Indigenous Peoples Student Association (IPSA), Indigenous Faculty and Staff Alliance (IFSA), the Office of Educational Equity, and the Office of the President developed a formal land acknowledgment to recognize the indigenous peoples whose land Penn State now sits on.

Although Native American Heritage Month events have already begun, there are more that will occur for the Penn State community to take part in. Several events specific to University Park are listed below.

“How To Become A Good Ally To Indigenous Peoples” Presentation

Speakers from several colleges, including the Nese College of Nursing and the College of Education, and other Penn State entities will give the “How to Become a Good Ally to Indigenous Peoples” presentation at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9. The presentation will be held via Zoom.

“Searching For Sequoyah” Screening & Panel

The 2021 film “Searching for Sequoyah” will be shown at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15, with a panel to follow at 7 p.m. The panel members include speakers from Penn State’s department of history and College of Engineering, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of Georgia.

The screening and panel will be held through WPSU.

“100 Years: One Woman’s Fight For Justice” Screening & Panel

“100 Years: One Woman’s Fight for Justice” will be shown at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16, with a panel to follow at 7:20 p.m. The panel consists of representatives from the colleges of engineering, education, and nursing.

Registration for this screening is required.

“The Hunt For Red Pedagogy” Presentation

Cornel Pewewardy, a Comanche and Kiowa professor from Portland State University, will present at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 17. Registration is required for this presentation.

In addition to these events, a food sovereignty display with book recommendations is open in the College of Engineering library on the third floor of the Hammond building throughout the entire month of November.
