Penn State Leaps To No. 11 In College Football Playoff Top 25 Rankings

The Nittany Lions continue to climb.

Penn State football is now ranked No. 11 in the College Football Playoff rankings, as announced on the ranking release show Tuesday night. James Franklin’s squad jumped three spots, after being ranked No. 14 last week.

Just two other Big Ten teams made the weekly rankings, with Ohio State and Michigan coming in at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

The bump in the rankings comes after Penn State’s second consecutive conference win, handily defeating Maryland 30-0 at home Saturday. True freshman running back Nick Singleton led the way with 122 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns on just 11 carries.

Elsewhere during the contest, Sean Clifford permanently stamped his name in the program record books, breaking Penn State’s all-time passing yard record and becoming the first Nittany Lion quarterback to eclipse the 10,000 yard mark.

In this week’s AP poll, Penn State saw similar upward movement. The Nittany Lions clocked in at No. 14 last week but now sit at No. 11. Of the other Big Ten schools, only Ohio State and Michigan were also ranked, landing at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

The Nittany Lions are back on the road this week, heading to Piscataway, New Jersey. Penn State will match up with conference opponent Rutgers, with the game kicking off at 3:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
