Rally To Defend ‘Anti-Racist Student-Protester’ Set For December 5
Students, faculty, and community members are welcome to partake in a rally hosted by The Student Committee for Defense and Solidarity to defend an “anti-racist student-protester” that’ll be held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, December 5, in front of Old Main. The rally’s purpose is to condemn the university’s administration for the “unjust persecution of an innocent student-protester” at October’s controversial event.
On October 24, student group Uncensored America welcomed Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes and Alex Stein to host a “comedy show” that would’ve featured presentations from both McInnes and Stein, along with a Q&A session. This then led to students protesting the event outside of the Thomas Building.
Things began to escalate to the point where things got physical and people were pepper sprayed, leading to the university’s cancellation of the event. Police later sent out a statement saying no officer deployed any spray and that one arrest was made for “disorderly conduct and defiant trespass.”
Organizers of the rally are saying the administration wants to make an example and hurt the student’s academic careers by engineering a “false narrative of bad behavior on both sides, hide admin’s wrongdoing, and appease the white supremacists.”
Those in charge of the rally want to show the world that they “do not consent to the admin’s shameful, anti-democratic abuse of power.”
