Ex-Penn State President Graham Spanier To Host HUB Bookstore Event

Former Penn State President Graham Spanier will host a presentation and book signing in the HUB Bookstore on January 25, according to Spanier’s website. The event, which is unsanctioned by the university, will promote Spanier’s new book.

Spanier’s book, “In The Lions’ Den,” describes an alleged miscarriage of justice in regard to the author’s forced departure from Penn State. The 512-page memoir was released in September.

After serving over 16 years as Penn State’s president, Spanier resigned in disgrace in 2011. Spanier’s resignation came in the wake of the university’s handling of the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal. Alongside Athletic Director Tim Curley and Senior Vice President Gary Schultz, Spanier faced criminal charges for child endangerment, which he was convicted of in November 2017.

In August 2021, Spanier was released from prison after serving 58 days. Despite his persistent claim of innocence, Spanier’s appeal of his prior convictions was denied in May 2021.

“In the Lions’ Den tells the true story of a scandal at Penn State University that unfairly resulted in the firing of the nation’s most successful and admired collegiate football coach and the respected president of the university. The book chronicles a criminal justice system run amok, political vindictiveness and retribution, moral panic, and the influence of a twisted media narrative,” reads the book’s description on Amazon.

“It is, in short, the anatomy of a smear, a memoir told by the university president who lost his job after an outstanding career in higher education,” the description continues. “The story, which is so outlandish that it would be impossible to make up, involves villains and heroes, fear and bravery, the rehabilitative value of friends and family, and coping with adversity.”
