Penn State Women’s Soccer Star Kate Wiesner Called Up To U.S. U-23 National Team
Penn State women’s soccer midfielder Kate Wiesner was called up to the U-23 Women’s National Team, the team announced Thursday morning. Wiesner, a senior from Monrovia, California, will travel to France for two matches against the French U-23 National Team.
Wiesner is among eight professional soccer players and 12 collegiate athletes that will compete in national matchups in France later this month. Among her teammates, Wiesner will be joined by former Big Ten foe Lauren Kozal, a goalkeeper from Michigan State. Kozal has since been drafted into the National Women’s Soccer League.
No stranger to international competition, Wiesner has an expansive international resume, including competing in 2016 as part of the U-17 Women’s World Cup Team and time spent on four youth national teams.
Her transatlantic pedigree has included competing on national teams for Confederation of North, Central America, and Carribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) World Cup qualifying games, too.
In Happy Valley, Wiesner helped Penn State claim the Big Ten Tournament Championship and make the most of a Sweet 16 apperance in the NCAA Tournament this past fall. Throughout three seasons with Penn State, Wiesner has tallied four goals and 13 assists through 50 appearances in the midfield.
