Comprehensive Penn State Sports Roundup: March 27 To April 10

There are several constants in life: death, taxes, and Penn State men’s volleyball, apparently.

Along with dominance on the volleyball court, several other sports — ahem, men’s lacrosse — are holding steady on the field and preparing to wrap up their seasons. Most other spring sports remain deep in conference play.

Men’s Volleyball

After a rough loss to Ohio State, Penn State men’s volleyball traveled to face EIVA Conference opponent Harvard on March 31 and April 1. The Nittany Lions swept both matches to get back in the win column.

The following weekend, Penn State was on the road again to face George Mason for two matches. Once again, it was an easy sweep in both games as the Nittany Lions took care of business. With the dominance over both schools, Penn State hasn’t dropped a set in nearly three weeks.

Baseball

Another Tuesday night baseball game, another Dollar Dog Night. On March 28, Penn State blew Pitt out of the water in a 16-8 win.

Facing their second conference opponent of the season, the Nittany Lions hosted Indiana on April 1. The team picked up its first conference win with a 7-2 victory over the Hoosiers. The following day, Indiana returned for a doubleheader, but Penn State couldn’t snag a win in either game, losing 4-1 followed by a rough 22-11.

Bucknell took a short trip to Happy Valley on Tuesday, April 4. Despite the Nittany Lions claiming the lead toward the end of the game, Bucknell still walked away with a 17-14 victory.

Heading into Easter weekend, Penn State set up for a three-game series against Delaware State. The first game, on Thursday evening, created a strong foundation for the Nittany Lions, as they grabbed a 7-2 win. The momentum carried the team through the rest of the weekend, where it secured a series sweep with 9-2 and 15-3 wins on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Softball

Penn State softball traveled to Minnesota to play a total of three games on March 31 and April 2. All three games were incredibly low-scoring, with the Nittany Lions only able to gather up a total of three runs. Penn State came home with one win and two losses. Scores for the weekend’s games were 2-0, 3-1, and 2-0.

In yet another Big Ten matchup the following weekend, it was a battle of the big cats: Nittany Lions vs Wildcats. This time, Northwestern came out on top, winning all three games of the series. Penn State softball will try to improve in conference play in games against Ohio State and Rutgers this week.

Men’s Lacrosse

As the men’s lacrosse team nears the end of its season, it’ll aim to keep rolling. Though the two teams were close in the rankings at the time, Penn State easily downed Ohio State 17-9 on April 2.

On April 8, No. 6 Johns Hopkins faced No. 8 Penn State for an intense top-10 matchup. The game went to double overtime and ultimately, the Nittany Lions emerged victorious with a 12-11 triumph en route to earning top-five distinction in the latest poll.

Women’s Lacrosse

Women’s lacrosse suffered a rare loss on March 30 at the hands of Northwestern. The Wildcats, who carried an 11-1 record at the time, made quick work of the Nittany Lions in a 19-9 defeat.

A few days later, on April 2, Penn State hosted Cornell and was able to get back where it belonged in the win column. Though the 13-10 victory was perhaps closer than the team would have liked, it was still a victory.

The No. 17-ranked Nittany Lions faced No. 16 Michigan on April 8, and the game was as close as one would imagine considering each team’s ranking. The Wolverines edged out the Nittany Lions and took them down 10-8.

Men’s Gymnastics

At the Big Ten Championships on March 31, men’s gymnastics took home second place with a team score of 410.700. The team also sent seven athletes to the individual event finals, where Josh Karnes took home first place on parallel bars. Several other athletes had second-place finishes. The Nittany Lions will both host and compete in the NCAA Championships on April 14 and 15.

Women’s Gymnastics

The Penn State women’s gymnastics team took down Towson with a score of 195.700-195.450 in the NCAA regional round on March 30. In the semifinal round the following day, Penn State placed third against Florida, Arizona State, and Maryland, ultimately ending the team’s season. Despite bouncing out of the competition, the Nittany Lions scored an impressive 196.825.

Though the team will not be moving on, Cassidy Rushlow and Ava Piedrahita will be competing in the NCAA Championships on bars and vault, respectively. The NCAA Championships will take place on April 13.

Outdoor Track & Field

Penn State traveled to Gainesville on March 31 for the Florida Relays. It was an excellent weekend for the team, as it earned a handful of impressive marks that will likely land at the top of the Big Ten standings and in the top 25 in NCAA standings.

The following weekend brought a split-squad weekend, with part of the team heading to LSU while the remainder of the team went to Duke. Competitors at LSU tallied a total of six event wins, and several others continued to ink their names in the Penn State record books. Rain at Duke prevented the other half of the team from competing this weekend.

Men’s Tennis

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the men’s tennis team. Since entering Big Ten play, Penn State hasn’t been able to pick up a win, putting quite the blemish on its good start. The team hosted Wisconsin at home on March 31 but walked away with a 5-2 loss. Later in the weekend on April 2, the Nittany Lions welcomed Nebraska and once again suffered a 5-1 loss.

A week later, it was all Michigan. The Nittany Lions headed to Ann Arbor on April 7 before taking a quick detour to play a match against Michigan State in East Lansing on April 9. The Great Lakes state wasn’t able to offer up much luck either, though. The Nittany Lions fell to the Wolverines with a score of 4-3 and followed this up with a rougher 4-1 loss to the Spartans on Sunday.

Women’s Tennis

The women’s tennis team, on the other hand, appears to be hanging on in its conference matchups. The Iowa Hawkeyes traveled to Penn State on April 7 and defeated the Nittany Lions in a narrow 4-3 match. A matchup against Nebraska on April 9 yielded a 4-2 win for Penn State, though.

Men’s Golf

There’s not much to report here. The men’s golf team doesn’t compete again until April 15 in State College.

Women’s Golf

Once again, there’s not much going on for the ladies. Their next tournament will also take place on April 15, but they will travel to Columbus to face Ohio State.
