Cal Poly’s Bernie Truax Transfers To Penn State Wrestling

The Nittany Lions added another dominant wrestler to the roster, folks.

Penn State wrestling scooped up Cal Poly’s Bernie Truax from the transfer portal Wednesday night. Truax will arrive in Happy Valley with one year of eligibility remaining.

Truax redshirted his first year at Cal Poly and won 14 of 21 matches in his debut season at 165 pounds. He remained in that weight class as a redshirt freshman and went 18-11 in the regular season en route to a third-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships and a 2020 National Championship appearance.

Truax jumped into the 174-pound weight class as a junior and quickly pulled together a 13-3 record, All-American status, and a Pac-12 title. The Oceanside, California, native’s junior season looked similar to his sophomore year as Truax upgraded to the 184-pound class and reached All-American status for the second time.

This past season, Truax recorded an 18-3 record in the 197-pound weight class, including a victory over Penn State’s Max Dean, and finished the campaign with a fourth-place finish at the 2023 National Championship as a three-time All-American.

With experience and wins under his belt, Truax will fit right in at Penn State with three national championship appearances to boast. Following Dean’s graduation from the program, Truax’s presence may make room for possible weight class changes in the 2023-24 season.
