Penn State Senior Expressing Himself Through ‘Eternal Spirits’ Clothing Line

Being a college student is difficult enough between trying to manage classes, homework, and a social life. Now, can you imagine running a business on top of that? Penn State senior Jabreel Dickens, who founded his own clothing line, “Eternal Spirits,” knows a little about that.

Dickens, a senior majoring in economics, knew that he wanted to enter the fashion industry from a young age.

“I wanted to start making clothes because I’ve always been into fashion. I have a couple of friends that have some clothing brands, so I knew it was something I could do, too.” Dickens said. “A lot of my friends also saw my passion for fashion and how I tend to pay attention to detail, so they encouraged me to do it.”

The Philadelphia native said his hardships inspired him to create his own brand. Creating clothing allowed Dickens to express himself and unexpectedly aided him in his grieving process.

“My grandfather passed away, and it made me feel like I was really in a funk,” Dickens said. “Creating my brand was kind of a way to get myself out of that funk. I was able to express myself through the clothing, and that kept me at peace.”

He turned his dreams into reality last August when he officially launched his clothing brand, Eternal Spirits. Dickens’ line features a colorful array of hoodies, t-shirts, and sweatpants, which are available for purchase through the Shopify store.

“I would describe it as comfortable streetwear,” Dickens said. “It’s great everyday clothing that anyone can wear. It is good quality and durable, and most importantly, students are able to afford it.”

Dickens recently had the opportunity to showcase his creations at the Visionary Visual Arts’ Dean’s List concert at Heritage Hall. Dickens exhibited his clothing line during a show packed with up-and-coming music artists.

Dickens, in spite of his success, has sometimes struggled to find a balance between his career as a student and a small business owner. Thankfully, he found support from those around him on campus.

“I would definitely say it’s difficult juggling everything,” Dickens said. “Something I’ve found success in recently is speaking with other creators and brands on campus, such as Samson Jiya, one of the co-founders of the brand EtheREAL. We haven’t collaborated on any projects, but I’m able to speak with them about the creative process and the business side of things. I’ve also asked my friends to support my brand, to help me, and be a part of my team so I am able to expand my business.”

While the business side of his clothing line is crucial, Dickens heavily values the peace and escape designing clothes offers him. One of his top priorities is having a creative outlet, and he encourages other students to also channel their energy into something they are passionate about.

“I would just say to any students struggling with anything, find a way to express yourself in a manner that uplifts you. Find a way to make time for yourself to do the things that keep your spirits up,” Dickens said.
