Penn State Announces 2023 Commencement Speakers

As the academic year comes to an end, Penn State is gearing up for its 2023 commencement festivities. With graduation fast approaching, the university announced its slate of speakers for each college’s ceremonies.

Between business executives, university professors, and public administrators, Penn State has a diverse offering of graduation speakers. Below is a breakdown of each college’s plans for the commencement addresses.

Schreyer Honors College

The Schreyer College’s medal ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. in the Bryce Jordan Center. University President Neeli Bendapudi is scheduled to speak.

College of Agricultural Sciences

Secretary of Pennsylvania’s Department of Agriculture Russell Redding will speak at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, at Pegula Ice Arena.

College of Arts and Architecture

Chief design officer at Nike John Hoke III will speak at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, at the Eisenhower Auditorium.

Smeal College of Business

The Class of 2023 in the Smeal College of Business will hear from Hampton University President Darrell Williams at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, in the Bryce Jordan Center. Williams is also a retired lieutenant general from the US Army.

Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications

Bellisario’s graduating students will hear from CEO and board member of International Game Technology Vince Sadusky at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, in the Bryce Jordan Center.

College of Earth and Mineral Sciences

Susan Avery, president emerita of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will speak to the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences’ graduates. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, in Pegula Ice Arena.

College of Education

Superintendent of the Philadelphia school district Tony Watlington Sr. is scheduled to give a commencement address at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 7, in Pegula Ice Arena.

College of Engineering

Charles L. Dages II, chairperson emeritus at the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, will speak at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 5, in the Bryce Jordan Center.

College of Health and Human Development

Commissioner of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Kathryn Ott Lovell will address the College of Health and Human Development at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 7, in the Bryce Jordan Center.

College of Information Sciences and Technology

Deanne Criswell, an administrator at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is scheduled to speak to this year’s IST graduates at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, in Pegula Ice Arena.

College of the Liberal Arts

Professor of anthropology at Penn State Nina Jablonski will speak at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing

Stacey-Ann Okoth, senior vice president and associate chief nursing executive for Jefferson Health in Philadelphia, will give her speech at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, in the Eisenhower Auditorium.

Eberly College of Science

Pediatric surgeon Ala Stanford will address the Eberly graduating class at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, at the Bryce Jordan Center. Stanford also served as the former regional director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The Graduate School

Assistant dean of nursing at Messiah University Kim Fenstermacher will address Penn State’s master’s and doctoral candidates during their ceremony at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, inside the Bryce Jordan Center.
