Penn State Football To Play Michigan State On Black Friday
Penn State football will play its 2023 matchup against Michigan State at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 24, at Ford Field, Michigan State first announced Wednesday.
According to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the move is part of an effort to clean up a mess in the Big Ten as the conference reportedly scrambles to finalize its new media rights deal ahead of the 2023 college football season.
Penn State is seemingly one of the schools trying to compensate for the conference’s mistakes, which includes altering a kickoff date for the annual Land-Grant Trophy game against Michigan State. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, November 25.
ESPN also alleged that the Black Friday matchup was scheduled before Penn State even agreed to the date. Former Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren apparently put several Big Ten schools in a bind before he left the conference, leaving Penn State, Ohio State, and Michigan State to make “short-term sacrifices to help the league make up for some lost revenue.”
The Michigan State matchup is now one of three Penn State football games that have a set broadcaster, as the game will air on NBC with streaming on Peacock. The team’s season opener against West Virginia will air on NBC at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 2. The annual White Out matchup against Iowa will air on CBS at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 23.
