Penn State Field Hockey Releases 2023 Schedule

We’re one day closer to Penn State sports.

Penn State field hockey released its 2023 season schedule Thursday. The team will play 16 games, eight of which will be played at home. The 2023 season will also be the first year for Lisa Bervinchak-Love at the helm of the program, following the retirement of longtime head coach Char Morett-Curtiss.

The Nittany Lions will open their campaign at 6 p.m. on August 25 on the road against Virginia, just short of one year after the Cavaliers opened Penn State’s schedule in Happy Valley. Last year, Penn State triumphed 3-2 over Virginia.

After Virginia, Penn State will face three more opponents on the road in American University, Cal, and Stanford. Between the Virginia game on August 25 and the Stanford game on September 3, the Nittany Lions will face four opponents in nine days.

After their stretch of road games, the Nittany Lions will return home for games against Kent State, Delaware, Rutgers, and Bucknell. Penn State faced all four of these teams in 2022 and went undefeated by a combined score of 14-3.

From there on out, Penn State will flip-flop between home and road games. Most notably, the Nittany Lions will face Syracuse, Maryland, Ohio State, Michigan, and Northwestern before closing the season on the road against Indiana. Northwestern was the only Big Ten team to defeat Penn State in 2022.

At the conclusion of the regular season, Michigan will host the Big Ten tournament from November 2 to 5. Should Penn State make the cut, its NCAA Tournament run will begin the following weekend from November 10 to 12.

The full 2023 schedule is below, with conference games marked in bold.

  • August 25 @ Virginia
  • August 27 @ American University
  • September 1 @ Cal
  • September 3 @ Stanford
  • September 8 vs. Kent State
  • September 10 vs. Delaware
  • September 15 vs. Rutgers

  • October 6 vs. Ohio State
  • October 13 @ Michigan State
  • October 15 @ Michigan
  • October 20 vs. Northwestern

Bervinchak-Love’s team is coming off of an impressive 2022 campaign that saw them reach the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament before they fell to North Carolina. In total, Penn State finished the year 17-4 overall and 9-1 in the Big Ten.
