Gameday Coverage: No. 7 Penn State vs. West Virginia

Here it is, folks.

No. 7 Penn State football will open the 2023 season against the West Virginia Mountaineers with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Beaver Stadium.

The expectations on the Nittany Lions are heightened after a 10-2 performance in 2022 and Rose Bowl victory, and much of that pressure falls on sophomore Drew Allar. West Virginia, meanwhile, concluded the previous campaign with a 5-7 overall outing. The prime-time duel will be the first matchup between the teams in 31 years, renewing a once-annual rivalry.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Penn State’s first game of the year.

Television

Saturday’s challenge will kick off at 7:30 p.m. EST on NBC. Noah Eagle and former Penn State quarterback Todd Blackledge will be on the call, while Kathryn Tappen will provide updates from the sidelines.

Radio

Penn State Sports Network — Steve Jones, Jack Ham, and Brian Tripp
Local: 99.5 & 103.7 FM/1450 AM, Sirius/XM/Internet: 204/98/967

Weather

The weather should be on the warmer side for kickoff at around 78 degrees. Temperatures should remain within the low to mid-70s throughout the game, and there’s a 0% chance of rain, according to Accuweather.

Last Meeting

Penn State walked away with a 40-26 victory in Morgantown on October 24, 1992. This is the teams’ first battle in 31 years and the Nittany Lions hold an all-time 42-6-1 record against the Mountaineers.

Injuries/Suspensions

Penn State doesn’t have any injuries or suspensions to report, but that’s not to say James Franklin won’t throw a curveball ahead of kickoff.

Offensive lineman Landon Tengwall announced his retirement from football Wednesday, citing an injury that wouldn’t allow him to play the sport safely. The former four-star recruit appeared in four games in 2022 before missing the remainder of the season to injury.

A recent Big Ten-wide mandate, however, requires football staff to submit gameday student-athlete availability reports “no later than two hours” before kickoff.

Betting Lines

Penn State is currently a 20.5-point favorite on FanDuel Sportsbook. The over/under is set at 48.5.
