Fire Damages East College Avenue Waffle Shop

Update, 12:13 a.m.

The Waffle Shop will be “closed until further notice,” according to a Facebook post published by the restaurant Tuesday night.

“Due to unfortunate circumstances, we will be closed until further notice,” the post read. “Luckily, there were no injuries and we’re so thankful to the Penn State students who aided in contacting the authorities during this sad event. Thank you to the Alpha fire company and other local responders who came to our aid this evening.”

Original Story:

A fire broke out Tuesday night at the downtown Waffle Shop, located at 364 E. College Ave.

Local police and firefighters responded to a smoke alarm notification around 8:30 p.m. It’s unclear when or how the fire started.

“We got called for a fire at the Waffle Shop for a smoke investigation at the Waffle Shop,” Alpha Fire Company Assistant Chief of Field Services Rusty Schreiner told Onward State Tuesday night. “Police got on scene with heavy smoke showing. We found fire at the rear stairwell… Crews are right now checking for extension into the nearby buildings. We don’t know if it made it into the building or how far. The building has some smoke damage, but right now we’re still assessing.”

The Lion’s Den was also evacuated due to the fire.

We’ll update this post with more information as it becomes available.
