Lady Lions’ Makenna Marisa Named To Preseason Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Of The Year Watch List

Penn State women’s basketball’s Makenna Marisa was named to the Preseason Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Watch List for the second year in a row, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced Monday.

Marisa is one of five Big Ten representatives on the list competing to be named women’s college basketball’s best point guard, including Iowa’s Caitlin Clark.

Candidates for the Nancy Lieberman Award must exemplify the leadership, play-making, and ball-handling skills associated with Nancy Lieberman, an Old Dominion and WNBA legend.

Marisa, a fifth-year from McMurray, Pennsylvania, boasts team-high statistics in scoring, assists, field goals made, free-throw conversions, and free-throw percentage. She is also the first Lady Lion to reach 1,750 career points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists, and 175 three-point conversions. Marisa was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team, too.

She joins Big Ten honorees Clark, Makira Cook, Shyanne Sellers, and Jacy Sheldon.

Folks can vote for Marisa in her battle for the Lieberman Award beginning on Friday, October 20. The candidate pool will be cut in half to 10 in January and cut again to five in February. The 2024 Nancy Lieberman Award will be dubbed following that, and the remaining four members of the watch list will be named to the award’s Starting Five.

Marisa and the Lady Lions will begin the 2023-24 campaign in under a month at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7, at the Bryce Jordan Center against Bucknell.
