Webster’s Bookstore Cafe Relaunching Weekly Vegan Brunch

Webster’s Bookstore Cafe in downtown State College has relaunched its vegan brunch buffet, which occurs every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for all members of the State College community.

The breakfast service returned earlier this year after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It became a fully vegan brunch in 2018.

“We just wanted to fill that hole, and it’s the way I love to cook,” Elaine Meder-Wilgus, owner of Webster’s, said. “It’s a great way for me to express my creativity.”

Every Sunday, Meder-Wilgus and her team prepare a menu including classic breakfast items like pancakes, waffles, and oatmeal, but also offer spicy vegan chili, tofu scramble, and more to fit every diet.

“I have an amazing baker who does vegan and gluten-free baked goods,” Meder-Wilgus said.

Tickets are $24 for the buffet and $15 for a single-serve option. Webster’s also offers 50% off made-to-order drinks for buffet users and an additional 10% off for those who bring their own sustainable food containers.

If you don’t have time to sit down for brunch, the bookstore also offers takeaway options. You can place your order Wednesday through Saturday and have it ready for pick up on Sunday morning.

“The fact that it is real food and often local and organic is really important to me,” Meder-Wilgus said. “But the social aspect of it, too, is something that we can offer that other places can’t.”

With room for plenty of tables and chairs, the brunch serves as an opportunity to relax and connect with others in the community.

“It’s a passion of mine to demonstrate to people that eating vegan is not sacrificing. It’s actually a gift to your body and a gift to the Earth,” Meder-Wilgus said.
