Report: Former Penn State Quarterback Trace McSorley Released From Chicago Bears Practice Squad

Former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley has been released from the Chicago Bears’ practice squad, per Tom Pelissero.

McSorley played for Penn State from 2015-2018, starting at quarterback for the latter three years. He left Beaver Stadium with 9,899 passing yards, 77 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions with a 59.3% completion rate, while rushing for 1,697 yards and 30 touchdowns. The Ashburn, Virginia, native’s passing yards and touchdowns total are second in program history — Sean Clifford broke both last season.

After the 2018 season, the Baltimore Ravens drafted McSorley with the No. 197 overall pick in the sixth round. McSorley spent two seasons in Baltimore as a backup for Lamar Jackson. In those two seasons, McSorley threw for 90 yards, one touchdown, and a 30% completion rate over three appearances. The Ravens waived him in 2021.

McSorley wasn’t on a 53-man roster until 2022 when the Arizona Cardinals picked him up. He appeared in six games for Arizona, including a Christmas day start. McSorley finished his time in Arizona with 412 passing yards, five interceptions, no touchdowns, and a 54.22% completion rate.

The Patriots signed McSorley during the 2023 preseason but waived him in August. Now, McSorley will be looking for a contract with his fifth team.
