Report: Pittsburgh Steelers Sign Trace McSorley To Practice Squad

Former Penn State football quarterback is reportedly off to his third team of the year after his release from the Chicago Bears’ practice squad. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter first reported the news Monday.

The Steelers’ starting quarterback, Kenny Pickett, is set to undergo ankle surgery for a high ankle sprain sustained in Pittsburgh’s 24-10 loss to the Cardinals. The Steelers aren’t anticipating placing Pickett on injury reserve, according to Ian Rapoport.

McSorley played for the Nittany Lions from 2015 to 2018 and started at quarterback for three years. Upon his departure from Happy Valley, the Ashburn, Virginia, native recorded 9,899 passing yards, 77 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions with a 59.3% completion rate. He also rushed for 1,697 yards and 30 touchdowns. McSorley’s passing yards and touchdown total are second in program history following four-year starter Sean Clifford.

After McSorley’s graduation, the Baltimore Ravens drafted the quarterback with the No. 197 overall pick in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. In his two seasons as a backup, McSorley threw for 90 yards, one touchdown, and a 30% completion rate in three appearances. He was later waived by the Ravens in 2021.

McSorley rejoined a roster with Arizona in 2022 and appeared in six games, finishing with 412 passing yards, five interceptions, and a 54.22% completion rate. He was waived by the Cardinals and released by New England about a year later.

The Steelers are McSorley’s fifth team since he entered the league in 2019. Pittsburgh is 7-5 through week 13 of play and ranks second in the AFC North.
