Kate Wiesner Drafted No. 7 Overall By Washington Spirit In 2024 NWSL Draft

Penn State women’s soccer’s first player off the NWSL draft board is Kate Wiesner.

Wiesner was selected by the Washington Spirit with the No. 7 overall pick in the first round on Friday night. Wiesner will join Nittany Lion Marissa Sheva at Audi Field.

Through five years with the program, Wiesner tallied six goals, 18 assists, and 59 starts through 71 appearances. She scored her first career goal in her collegiate debut against Stanford in 2019. The left-back didn’t participate in the 2021 spring season due to an injury but bounced back to appear in 19 games during her junior season.

In 2022, Wiesner led the conference in assists with 11 and scored two goals, including a game-winner against No. 12 Northwestern to reach the Big Ten Tournament Championship, which the Nittany Lions clinched.

In her final season, the Monrovia, California, native recorded nine points by way of two goals and five assists. Both of Wiesner’s 2023 goals were game-winners, helping Penn State tally wins over Maryland and Indiana. Her 1,688 minutes on the Nittany Lions’ backline aided the team to a No. 1 scoring defense in the Big Ten.

Following her final campaign at Jeffrey Field, Wiesner was named to the All-Big Ten third team, earned Big Ten All-Tournament Team accolades, the Big Ten Sportsmanship distinction, and an appearance as the NCAA Digital National Player of the Week in September.

The Spirit went 7-9-6 in 2023 play and boasts United States Women’s National Team stars Trinity Rodman, Ashley Hatch, and Andi Sullivan on the roster.
