Report: Boise State Expected To Hire Penn State Football Special Teams Coordinator Stacy Collins

Penn State football special teams coordinator Stacy Collins is reportedly heading to Boise State to be the program’s special teams coordinator, linebackers coach, and assistant head coach, according to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.

Collins spent the last two seasons at Penn State as the special teams coordinator, outside linebackers coach, and nickelbacks coach. He took the job after one season as Boise State’s special teams coordinator and edge rushers coach.

Collins’ special teams finished No. 22 in the country this past season. The group had 57 touchbacks, 286 opposing kickoff return yards, and 16.82 yards per game. That’s fourth in the Big Ten behind Iowa, Rutgers, and Michigan.

Collins steadily improved the kickoff return unit in Happy Valley. The group, which had 18.53 yards per return in 2021, saw an increase to 22.35 in 2022, and then 23.25 this past season. Much of that can also be attributed to Nick Singleton, who has been the team’s primary kickoff returner for the last two seasons. He went on to earn second-team All-Big Ten honors as a return specialist in 2022. Additionally, Collins coached players such as Chris Stoll, who won the Patrick Mannelly Award, which honors the nation’s best long-snapper.

Now, James Franklin is reportedly replacing his third coordinator this offseason. He fired Mike Yurcich after Penn State lost 20-15 to Michigan back in November, and replaced him with former Kansas offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. Then, defensive coordinator Manny Diaz took Duke’s head coaching vacancy in December, and Franklin hired former Indiana head coach Tom Allen as a replacement.
