Getting To Know Penn State Football Special Teams Coordinator Justin Lustig

James Franklin has reportedly filled his third coordinator vacancy, folks.

After hiring offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki and defensive coordinator Tom Allen, Franklin was tasked with filling the job left behind by departing special teams coordinator Stacy Collins.

247Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported Monday night that Penn State was set to hire Vanderbilt tight ends coach and special teams coordinator Justin Lustig as the team’s latest coordinator.

The Erie, Pennsylvania, native comes from Vanderbilt after four seasons with the Commodores. During his time at Vanderbilt, Lustig produced 53 all-conference selections, the 2023 Ray Guy Award finalist Matthew Hayball, and two-time All-SEC long snapper Wesley Schelling. The Commodores’ special teams unit was one of only 20 programs nationwide to block multiple punts and finished 11th nationally in net punting.

Before Vanderbilt, Lustig spent time bouncing around Division I and II programs in various roles as a coach. After finishing his playing career with Bucknell in 2000, Lustig began his coaching career as an assistant at Christopher Newport. After a season as the cornerbacks coach at Villanova, Lustig returned to Christopher Newport for his first special teams coordinator job.

From there, Lustig spent time as special teams coordinator at Eastern Illinois, Louisiana Lafayette, and Ball State before leaving for a head coaching job at Division II Edinboro.

During his lone season at Edinboro, Lustig was named D2Football.com’s Head Coach of the Year and turned an 0-11 record from the previous year into a 9-2 finish in 2016. Lustig left Edinboro and returned to Division I as the Syracuse outside receivers coach and was a Broyles Award finalist in 2018.

Lustig left Syracuse for Vanderbilt prior to the 2020 season and will reportedly join Penn State ahead of the 2024 campaign. Lustig will take over a special teams unit that was consistent during the 2023 season after being a concern early.

Penn State football will need key spots filled before next season with punt returner Daequan Hardy declaring for the NFL Draft and placekicker Alex Felkins exhausting his collegiate eligibility. However, placekicker Sander Sahaydak and punt returner Kaden Saunders, who were both starters at the beginning of the year, will return next season.

Punter Riley Thompson, who had questions surrounding his eligibility at the end of the 2023 season, will also be return.
