Report: Former Penn State Football Head Coach Bill O’Brien To Join Ohio State As Offensive Coordinator
Former Penn State football head coach Bill O’Brien has been hired as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Ohio State would be O’Brien’s fourth coaching job since he left Penn State, after the Houston Texans, Alabama, and the New England Patriots.
O’Brien took over Penn State in the wake of the Sandusky scandal after leaving his job as the offensive coordinator with the Patriots. He coached the Nittany Lions for two years before leaving for Houston and finished his time with the program with a 15-9 record and was named the Bear Bryant College Football Coach of the Year for the 2012 season after taking over a sanction-riddled program.
After his two years at Penn State, O’Brien went to Houston to lead the Texans as their head coach. He went 52-48 in Texas, winning four division titles and earning a promotion to general manager along the way. However, after Houston started the 2020 season with a 0-4 record, he was fired from both jobs.
O’Brien landed on his feet and went to Alabama, where he served as Nick Saban’s offensive coordinator. O’Brien joined the Crimson Tide the year after Saban’s last national title, though he did coach Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young in 2021.
After two seasons at Alabama, O’Brien returned to the Patriots, where he served under Bill Belichick for the coach’s final year with the organization. In O’Brien’s lone year in New England, the Patriots went 4-13, finishing at the bottom of the AFC East and missing the playoffs.
O’Brien will join Ohio State as its offensive coordinator after the Buckeyes lost 11 players to the transfer portal, including starting quarterback Kyle McCord to Syracuse and wide receiver Julian Fleming to Penn State.
