Onward State Attempts To Eat One Hot Dog For Every Hour Of THON

If you are an avid Onward State reader, you know how much we love hot dogs. We love them so much we try to take on any hot dog related challenge we can at Penn State, and what better way to celebrate THON than eating a glizzy for every hour of THON?

I challenged myself to do just that. Now, I’m sorry to say this, but spoiler alert, I didn’t complete the challenge. Not only am I a broke college kid living in a world where hot dogs are expensive, but I don’t think it’s physically possible or healthy for me to eat 46 hot dogs over a two-day span.

Instead of eating 46 dogs, I decided to eat 16 hot dogs — one for every hour I worked THON on press row for Onward State.

After grabbing my supplies at the store, I went home and made my mountain of glizzys. I opted for Oscar Mayer dogs, shoutout to the Wienermobile, and Martin’s potato rolls.

Everything was set for THON Weekend, except I forgot one key detail about THON, outside food is not allowed. So now with 16 hot dogs sitting in my fridge at home, I had to come up with a plan to get my hot dogs into the Bryce Jordan Center. I’m not proud of this, but I managed to fit the hot dogs into my fanny pack and get them into the arena without any question.

My first shift was 4 to 9 p.m. on Friday: the first day of THON. I was only eating glizzies during hours in which dancers were standing, so I had my first one right at the start of the 46 hours.

The rest of the shift was a breeze for me as hot dogs two and three went down with ease, and I returned home ready for the uphill battle I was on for the rest of the weekend.

I returned to the BJC at 4 p.m. on Saturday for an eight-hour shift — my longest of the weekend. Like the first night, the first couple of hot dogs went down well, and by the time the Pep Rally came around, I was halfway done.

However, after the Pep Rally, I hit a wall. I don’t know if it was the line dance or the fact that I just had five hot dogs and nothing else to eat, but I was struggling to eat the remaining dogs. On top of that, DJ Dosk was performing after the Pep Rally, and I had to dance and jump around for that.

At the end of my shift, thanks to some helpful mustard, I got down the remaining dogs I had for the night, but with my next shift coming just six hours later, I knew the next day was going to be rough.

I arrived back at THON on at 6 a.m. on Sunday with only five hot dogs left to eat. Right when I got settled in, I had my first dog of my final stretch. Have you ever had a glizzy for breakfast? I have, and it’s not as great as it sounds.

As the rest of the shift went on, I continued to push through until I had only one dog remaining. With only minutes until 11 a.m., I crushed the last glizzy and finished my challenge of eating 16 hot dogs during THON.

While you may think that this was easy, I did struggle throughout the challenge. Eating only hot dogs for three days straight isn’t something I’ll probably attempt again, but baseball season is around the corner, and with that comes Dollar Dog Night.
